OUTLINE THE CONTEXT FOR THE E-LEARNING COURSE TO BE DEVELOPED THROUGHOUT THIS SUBJECT- THE LEARNING CONTEXT CAN BE TAILORED TO THE STUDENT’S CONTEXT
BACKGROUND INFO
Maddie’s Events is an events management business that organizes and prepares events and celebrations such as Parties, Weddings, Formals and Concerts. The business targets customers of all ages and with all different needs. The business comprises of senior management, five supervisors and employees. The business has been operating for three years and is made up of about fifty employee’s altogether.
Learner Profile:
The learners undertaking this elearning course will consist of the employees of Maddie’s Events. As they will be working first hand with the event itself and its participants. The learners will have a wide variety of learning styles and skills that will need to be taken into account for. The learners come from a variety of different backgrounds and ages. However the learners should be over the age of 16 to undertake the course. Employees are often put into groups and teams and are required to work together on specific events. It is vital that the learning activities chosen are simple, easy to do and relate back to the workplace so that the learning is effective.
Organisational Context:
The learners undergoing this e-learning course have a strong background in public relations and events. Many of the employees have a degree or experience in the events and entertainment industry.
Learning Outcomes& Unit of Competency Code:
Are based on the unit of competency THHGHS03B: Provide First Aid
Purpose/Rationale:
After one particular event where an employee was injured in the workplace and needed assistance. None of the employees knew had to perform and provide first aid. Management identified that a first aid course was required and that it should be conducted online as an e-learning course.
The purpose of this e-learning course is to educate learners with the skills and knowledge required in providing essential first aid and responding to emergency situations using basic support life measures. After completing the e-learning course learners will be able to assess the emergency situation, apply basic first aid techniques, monitor the emergency situation and prepare required documentation effectively.
- EXPLAIN THE LEARNING THEORY OR THEORIES AND HOW THEY ARE TO BE APPLIED TO THE CONTEXT
For this particular e-learning course I have chosen one particular learning theory that will help contribute positively learning for this e-learning course.
-
THe Cognitive Approach- Cognitivists believe that learning is shaped by our experiences and that these experiences form into patterns that we find meaningful and insight that we can identify with.
HOW CAN THE COGNITIVIST APPROACH BE APPLIED TO THE CONTEXT(HOW HAVE THESE THEORIES BEEN USED IN THE STORYBOARD)
-
In the storyboard by providing learners with content that enables them to apply problem solving skills and making them think outside the box encourages further and more deep and meaningful learning.
-
Competency based training is used to get a desired result. “The use of competency based training programs ensures that all training programs are integrated to produce specific results” (Coco et al, 2006,pg. 210)
-
Because cognitive learners will reorganise the information into meaningful and insightful information it is important to provide examples that the learners will relate to. The Advance Organiser in the storyboard shows the link between the theory and the content of information
-
Feedback will be given after quizzes and the final examination in the storyboard to help learners build on the knowledge they have taken in from the content.
-
By looking at the bigger picture rather than bits and pieces the learners can see how this training course will affect the business overall.
-
Encouragement and feedback is a major factor that helps cognitive learners take in different skills and knowledge. Feedback is shown on the storyboard to help learners understand their mistakes and what knowledge they actually remembered. Feedback is given right from the start of the elearning course through to the final exam.
-
Techniques used in the storyboard such as Observations, demonstrations and models are shown and used throughout the storyboard to help cognitive learners. For example. The SecondLife avatar will demonstrate and model ways and techniques to apply basic first aid.
-
DEVELOP A STORYBOARD THAT REFLECTS THE CHOSEN LEARNING THEORY OR THEORIES

Apologies that the storyboard had to be placed on an image host website. I used the application Inspiration to host my storyboard and had a lot of problems converting the file onto a webpage. I tried everything to get my storyboard onto the blog, but it wouldnt work. First I had edublogs telling me that the content i uploaded was “Breached Edublogs Security” and then I experienced quite a lot of Internet crashes while trying to paste my storyboard image into the blog. If the link still doesnt work you can email me on madelaine.l.lown@student.uts.edu.au and I will send the work to you directly.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGIES. OUTLINING AND JUSTIFYING WHICH TECHNOLOGIES SUPPORT THE SELECTED LEARNING THEORIES AND CONTEXTS
When integrating technologies into elearning training programs the technologies need to be interesting, simple and easy to use so that learning is effective. The two technologies are used are Virtual worlds and Podcasting and Vodcasting. The reasons why these particular learning technologies were implemented into the storyboard and e-learning course were to make the learning intriguing and interesting. The use of virtual worlds in the training course relates back to the cognitive learning approaches used in the storyboard. When integrating technologies into learning courses they should provide learners with knowledge and resources to transfer these skills back to the workplace. Virtual worlds provide many methods and techniques to support cognitive learning. For example having learners work in groups and be able to solve problems and issues on SecondLife and the idea of social networking which brings groups of people together to solve and discuss common issues/problems.
-
The Humanist approach was not included in this particular e-learning course as humanists let their emotions and feelings play an important part in learning. This would be hard to integrate into a first aid course as when emergency situations do arise they require us to leave our feelings and emotions behind and act on the situation. It would also be hard for humanists to relate to the learning as emergency situations dont happen often and are spontaneous. Even though we do learn from our experiences when providing first aid we cant predict when these situations can happen.
-
A constructivist approach doesnt suit the training course as learners are required to be formally assessed in order to pass the course
